Rasmus stayed in her flat awhile after she left. He saw by daylight and alone her pretty cushions, her colorful clothes hanging on the rack, the fruit in the bowl, the bin full of tissues. Fairy lights along the shelf, and a rubber duck in the kitchen sink. Photos. That’ll be him, he thought, looking at a dark, smiling man beside a little Róisín with long curly hair and a jacket cinched in at the waist. There was something saucy about her figure. He blinked. They were in a garden of some kind; it looked formal. A wedding maybe. Another where Nico was in his paramedic uniform, with a hairnet. Respect, thought Rasmus.

Rasmus hadn’t made a new friend for ten years. He hadn’t needed friends. Friendship is serious. Once someone is your friend you have a responsibility.

He folded the duvet and straightened the cushions on the sofa, then lay back on them, and wondered what on earth he was going to do.

“What do you think, Jay?” he murmured. “Do you like her?” But Jay wasn’t there.
